Find a face. Make it part of your message.

Start with the feeling you want to express. Search the library for a mood, animal, or gesture, or open one of the twelve topics. Click a face once to copy its complete characters; the check mark and confirmation tell you when it is ready.

Paste beside your own words with Command+V on Mac, Ctrl+V on Windows, or your phone’s Paste command. Read the result in the destination app before sending. A heart saves the face to Favorites in this browser; it does not create an account or sync your collection to another device.

02 / THE KAOMOJI GUIDE

What is a kaomoji? Read the small details.

A kaomoji is an upright expression built from text characters. You read it face-on: the eyes often suggest the mood, the mouth adds a smile or frown, and marks outside the face can become arms, whiskers, or decorations. The Japanese word 顔文字 combines the ideas of a face and written characters.

There is no single dictionary that fixes every expression’s meaning. A closed eye can look sleepy in one face and content in another. Start with the whole shape, then use the surrounding sentence to understand its tone.

Eyes set the mood

In (T_T), the vertical T shapes suggest tears. In (◕‿◕), the open eyes and curved mouth make a brighter expression.

Arms turn a face into a gesture

The reaching っ characters in (っ´ω`)っ suggest a hug. A raised ノ can read as a wave.

Text faces, emoticons, and emoji

Kaomoji such as (◕‿◕) stay upright. A sideways emoticon such as :) uses a simpler rotated face. Emoji such as 😊 are pictographs; both emoji and text characters can change appearance with the app and font.

03 / THE KAOMOJI GUIDE

Keep a useful face within typing distance.

For faces you use often, a keyboard shortcut can save a trip back to the library. Pick a distinctive trigger such as ;hug rather than an ordinary word you might type in another context. Test the shortcut in the app where you plan to use it.

Windows

Press the Windows logo key and period (.) while a text field is focused. Open the kaomoji section in the emoji panel and choose a face. The panel’s layout can vary with your Windows version.

iPhone

Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Text Replacement. Tap +, paste your face into Phrase, enter a shortcut, and save. Try it in a message before relying on it.

Mac

Open System Settings → Keyboard → Text Replacements. Add the trigger and the full face as its replacement. Some apps manage substitutions separately, so check the app’s text substitution settings if nothing expands.

Android with Gboard

Open Gboard settings, then Dictionary → Personal dictionary. Choose a language and add the face with an optional shortcut if your version provides it. Select the suggestion when you type the shortcut. Other Android keyboards have their own menus.

Choose for the moment, then choose the face.

A kaomoji works best when it supports something you already want to say. A cheerful gesture can celebrate a small win; a sleepy cat can finish a goodnight. These six starting points lead to complete topic libraries with examples and meanings.

05 / THE KAOMOJI GUIDE

Give the characters room to breathe.

In a chat, put a space between your sentence and the face so the eyes and arms stay readable. In a bio or caption, try one compact expression first. If the app shows a character allowance, check it after pasting: decorative text can take more room than it appears to.

Discord and other Markdown-aware editors may interpret backslashes or underscores as formatting. A shrug can lose an arm even when the original copy was correct. Compare the pasted version with the original; if formatting gets in the way, try the app’s plain-text option or a code span when suitable. Code styling changes how the message looks, so preview it too.

A square or empty box usually points to a character the receiving font cannot draw. A face split across two lines may simply be too wide. Try a shorter face or a simpler character set instead of adding spaces until the problem is harder to see.

06 / THE KAOMOJI GUIDE

Make the expression more personal.

In AI kaomoji, describe one character, mood, or small gesture and choose a style. A successful request returns six text faces. Compare their shapes, copy one, or save a result in this browser. Generating sends your description to the configured AI provider; your creations are not automatically published.

Mix & match is the manual alternative on the same page. Choose parts and decorations yourself, then preview the whole expression. Manual assembly stays in your browser. Neither method guarantees every destination app will render every character, so keep the final paste check.

Questions that come up after the first paste.

These answers cover everyday copying and saving. For the tone of a particular expression, open its topic page and compare the examples with your own situation.

How do I copy a kaomoji on KaomojiBox?

Click the expression itself. A check mark and copy confirmation appear after a successful copy. The heart is a separate control for saving a favorite. If automatic copying is blocked, the copy helper lets you select the full expression manually.

Why does my kaomoji show boxes instead of symbols?

The receiving app or font may not include the needed characters. Try a simpler face, another available font, or a different destination app. Copying the same missing symbol again will not install the font that is needed to display it.

Why did the backslash disappear from my shrug?

Some editors treat a backslash as a formatting escape. Compare your pasted shrug with its original, and try the editor’s plain-text or code option if appropriate. The right fix depends on where you are pasting.

Can I type a kaomoji without visiting the site each time?

You can use a built-in kaomoji panel where available or save a face as a text replacement. The keyboard section above gives device-specific starting points. These shortcuts belong to your device or keyboard, rather than KaomojiBox.

Where are my favorites saved?

Favorites are stored in this browser on this site. They are not an online account or a cross-device backup. Clearing site data or changing browsers can remove access to them. AI and handmade faces can be saved locally too.

Can I use kaomoji in an Instagram bio or Discord message?

You can paste text faces into supported text fields. Check line wrapping, remaining character allowance, and any formatting the app applies. Availability in one field does not guarantee the same display in another.

Do I need AI to make a kaomoji?

No. You can edit copied text yourself or use manual Mix & match. AI is an optional way to explore faces from a description; manual assembly lets you choose the parts directly.

Tap a heart to keep your favorite faces in this browser. There are no accounts, advertising, or analytics. Searching, manual creation, and favorites stay on this device.

When you press Generate in the AI generator, your description is sent to our configured AI provider to create text faces. Your descriptions and creations are not automatically published.

AI generation uses Cloudflare Turnstile to check for automated requests. An essential, signed browser cookie lasts up to 30 days and keeps your generation allowance shared across pages and languages.

For abuse protection, we keep hashed browser and network identifiers with request counts for up to 48 hours; this quota record contains no raw IP addresses, descriptions, or generated faces. Daily allowances reset at 00:00 UTC.

Fonts and illustrations are served with the site. Some characters may render differently across devices. Clearing browser data removes your favorites.
